Thirty-nine people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, part of a surge of gun violence that has plagued the city since January 2016. Shootings that month were more than twice the number of a typical January.

Ever since, there's been a new victim roughly every other hour. WBEZ's Chip Mitchell (@ChipMitchell1) looks at what might have sparked the shooting surge.
