China's "Belt and Road" initiative evokes the ancient Silk Road network of trade routes that once connected Europe to East Asia. As China updates that idea for the 21st century, the China Ocean Shipping Company has spent billions of dollars acquiring stakes in European ports.

Our series on "Belt and Road" continues as Here & Now's Jeremy Hobson talks with Frans-Paul van der Putten, a senior research fellow at the Clingendael Institute (@Clingendaelorg) in the Netherlands.

This segment aired on February 14, 2018.
