The federal government is suing California over three state laws designed to protect undocumented immigrants. But back in the 1990s, California waged it own fight against people in the country illegally. Proposition 187 would have denied undocumented immigrants most public services. Voters backed the measure, but the courts struck most of it down.

KQED's Farida Jhabvala Romero (@FaridaJhabvala) has the story of how a protest against Proposition 187 changed lives in a community near San Jose.
