The Lunar New Year began on Tuesday, and across the world, people kicked it off by gathering with family and honoring new beginnings. In Mongolia, the holiday is still going on — with a particularly rural flair. NPR's Emily Kwong (@emilykwong1234) has been celebrating with some herding families.

Emily Kwong is NPR's Above the Fray fellow. The fellowship is sponsored by the John Alexander Project, which supports foreign reporting in under-covered parts of the world.

This segment aired on February 8, 2019.
