HBO Europe's "Beforeigners" has an outlandish premise: People from the past start emerging from the waters of present-day Earth. They're thrust into a modern society with no way to get home, and as they struggle to assimilate, these "time-igrants" face xenophobia and prejudice.

Set in Oslo, Norway, the plot is a cross between a sci-fi thriller and a murder mystery, with a helping of social commentary.

NPR TV critic Eric Deggans (@deggans) talks to host Peter O'Dowd about the network's first Norwegian-language series.

This segment aired on March 6, 2020.
