President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria addressed the nation Thursday after weeks of silence as the #EndSARS protests have roiled the country.

On Oct. 20, Nigerian Armed Forces fired into a crowd of peaceful protesters, allegedly killing seven, but Thursday night President Buhari seemed to call on the protesters to exercise restraint.

Eyder Peralta, NPR's East Africa correspondent based in Nairobi, Kenya, joins us.

This segment aired on October 23, 2020.
