Summer hiking season is here. And though the trails and mountains beckon, a recent rise in accidents hiking-related accidents is a warning that nature can be as unforgiving as it is beautiful.

Emergency responders in Las Cruces, New Mexico, earlier this month rescued four hikers from a mountain ledge in a grueling 14-hour operation. Though successful, the effort put everyone involved at risk. And that was only one of dozens of rescues this year alone.

So what can hikers of all ages and skill levels do to stay safe on the trails? Host Robin Young talks to Heather Klein Olson, acting executive director of the American Hiking Society, about the simple preparations that can keep hikers safe, fit and eager to return to nature.

This segment aired on June 26, 2023.
