This month's Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region is causing the biggest displacement of civilians since the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war. The incursion is wreaking havoc in a region that had been rebuilding and is now being subjected to shelling and tanks, resulting in lost homes and infrastructure.

Ukraine's troops, stretched thin, are trying to hold off the powerful offensive, as residents in the border town of Volchansk are under siege, and fearful of a second occupation.

Host Robin Young talks to security analyst and Kharkiv resident Maria Avdeeva about the latest.

This segment aired on May 23, 2024.
