After six decades, the groundbreaking 1961 Broadway play “Purlie Victorious” returned to Broadway this season.

Set in the 1950s, it starred Leslie Odom Jr. of "Hamilton" fame as the preacher Purlie, and powerhouse actor Kara Young as his accomplice, Lutabelle Gussie Jenkins. Together, they trick a profoundly racist white plantation owner in the Jim Crow South into returning Purlie's rightful inheritance.

The show is up for six Tony Awards on Sunday, including Best Play Revival, Best Actor for Odom Jr., Best Featured Actress for Young, and Best Direction for Kenny Leon.

Host Robin Young visited the show last year and spoke to Kara Young and Odom Jr. about their roles and the impact of the show on their lives and others.

This segment aired on June 10, 2024.
