Do vice presidential debates matter?

05:43

The vice presidential debate is Tuesday night in New York. Republican JD Vance will square off against Democrat Tim Walz.

Vice-presidential debates may not be hugely consequential for the election, but they could influence the future careers of the candidates. And Tuesday night may show what kind of vice president they might be.

Here & Now's Scott Tong talks to Julian Zelizer, professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, about how the role of vice president has evolved over the last century and how much vice presidential debates matter.

This segment aired on October 1, 2024.
