Anand Patwardhan’s movies have investigated seismic shifts in Indian society, from survival in the slums of Mumbai to anti-Muslim violence by Hindu nationalists. His latest turns the camera on his own loved ones.

The World is Family” documents the final years of the filmmaker’s parents' lives. It’s a contemplative and intimate portrait not just of his family, but of the India that they helped build — and how it seems to be slipping away.

Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes speaks with filmmaker Patwardhan. "The World is Family" is showing at The Metrograph in New York City on Dec. 5.

This segment aired on November 29, 2024.
