Panama's President José Raúl Mulino is trying to stem the flow of migrants crossing the treacherous Darien Gap, a 70-mile stretch of undeveloped jungle near the Panama-Colombia border.

After Mulino took office in July, he reached an agreement with the United States to fund deportation flights of migrants detained in Panama. And Panama is putting troops and razor wire fences along paths through the Darien Gap to stop migrants.

Here & Now's Scott Tong speaks with Santiago Pérez, the Wall Street Journal's deputy editor for Latin America.

This segment aired on January 16, 2025.
