Texas writer and singer-songwriter team up on 'Postcards from the Border'
A well-regarded Texas writer and an amazing singer/songwriter are teaming up to present a spoken word and music performance in Austin called "Postcards from the Border."
The intent of Oscar Casares and Carrie Rodriguez is to challenge ingrained notions of the Texas-Mexico border and portray it as, simply, their homeland.
Oscar zigzagged down the border and wrote a series of postcards to his 10-year-old daughter attempting to portray life on both sides of the Rio Grande. His subjects include his cousin, a border cop, a trans woman in El Paso dealing with her "internalized border," a Congolese immigrant who walked across Mexico to the city of Juarez, a farmworker in Texas onion fields, and a family reunion that includes a Pachanga barbecue and a shopping trip for a headstone.
John Burnett reports.
