Secret Assad files show spying, informing, betrayal

10:59

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's repressive regime in Syria, troves of secret government intelligence files were discovered. They reveal a vast system of citizens spying and informing on each other.

In many cases, people were threatened and forced to become informants. Sometimes people were paid or coerced in other ways to reveal names and activities of friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even family members who could be part of the opposition to Assad.

Here & Now's Scott Tong talks to Louise Callaghan of The Sunday Times about her access to intelligence files in Homs and what they show about Syria's surveillance state.

This segment aired on January 23, 2025.
