As Kelseyville, Calif., navigates its uncomfortable history, there's a push to rename it
Kelseyville, California, is named after Andrew Kelsey, a man who brutally enslaved, tortured and murdered members of the local indigenous population during the mid-19th Century.
In the past few years, there's been a push to rename the town, but voters overwhelmingly rejected a measure to change the name to Konoctie, a local volcano in the area. Despite this, a county board voted 3-2 to recommend a name change to the federal government.
Host Lisa Mullins talks with Eddie Crandell — a member of the Robinson Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians and the Vice Chairman of the Lake County, California, Board of Supervisors — about why he voted to recommend the name change despite backlash from his local community members.
