Trump wants federal workers back in the office. Will it improve efficiency, lower costs?
Just hours after being sworn in, President Trump issued an executive order stating that all departments and agencies should take immediate steps to “terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in person.”
Though the percentage of government employees working entirely from home is relatively small — about 10% or 228,000 of federal workers — there are questions about the economic impact and feasibility of the order.
Elon Musk, a promoter of the plan who is leading Trump's efforts to cut the federal government, wrote in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed that a five-day-a-week mandate would cause a wave of voluntary terminations “that we welcome.”
Host Robin Young talks to Stanford professor and economist Nicholas Bloom, co-founder of the research website WFH Research, about what the decision means for workers, efficiency and the economy.
