China's DeepSeek could reshape the U.S. tech industry and Trump's AI policy

A breakthrough in artificial intelligence is upending the tech industry. A scrappy Chinese startup developed a powerful new AI model for a fraction of the price of its American rivals at the likes of OpenAI and Google, and they put it out for free.

DeepSeek shot to the top of the app store as people tried out the new chatbot for themselves. Stocks in the global tech industry lost more than a trillion dollars as investors reckoned with what’s been called AI’s “Sputnik moment.”
