Target was once seen as a leader on racial and social justice issues, but now finds itself facing public backlash over the rollback of some key diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

In the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, the company vowed to increase its Black workforce by 20% and take other steps to “advance racial equity.” The murder of Floyd happened in the company's home city — just minutes from its headquarters.

However, just a few years on from those declarations, Target has rolled back on key DEI initiatives and now faces falling foot traffic, online ridicule and a possible boycott. Target is not the only company facing challenges over DEI rollback.

Host Scott Tong speaks to Andrew Adam Newman of Retail Brew for more.

This segment aired on February 26, 2025.
