The Trump administration is accusing Maine of sex discrimination for allowing transgender girls to participate in school sports. It made that determination official Monday, less than a month after launching a series of federal investigations into the state, following an executive order in February that sought to ban transgender girls and women from female-only sports across the country.

Maine is one of more than a dozen states with laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity, but it has become the biggest target of the Trump administration’s campaign to prevent transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports. There are now more federal agencies cracking down on Maine than there are transgender girls competing in girls’ sports in the state.

Here & Now's Robin Young speaks with Jennifer Smith Richards, investigative reporter for ProPublica.

This segment aired on March 18, 2025.
