On Point honored with a Gracie Award

WBUR’s On Point has been recognized by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation with a Gracie Award for Chauvin Trial: A Look Back at 1992 LA and America Since Rodney King.

The episode, honored in the national radio documentary category, was hosted by Meghna Chakrabarti, produced by Anna Bauman with sound design by Tim Skoog from a concept created by On Point Senior Editor Dorey Scheimer. The Gracies celebrate exemplary talent and programming created by, for and about women in radio, television, and digital media.

Chauvin Trial: A Look Back at 1992 LA and America Since Rodney King aired on April 16, 2021. The episode explored how George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis police custody in May 2020 was tragically reminiscent of the brutal beating of Rodney King by the L.A. police 30 years earlier. On Point discussed what has and has not changed since then with Attorney John Burris, who represented King in his civil lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department in 1994; Vaughn Dickerson, co-founder of 88 C.H.U.M.P., a nonprofit social activism organization; and, Lora King, King's daughter and CEO of the Rodney King Foundation.

On Point host Meghna Chakrabarti leads provocative conversations that help listeners make sense of the world. The show broadcasts live on air from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. EST Monday through Friday, and is available as a podcast. It airs throughout the day and evening on nearly 300 public radio stations coast to coast. On Point is produced by WBUR in Boston, and distributed by American Public Media.

“Throughout this past year we have seen a number of remarkable projects by and about inspirational women,” said Becky Brooks, President, Alliance for Women in Media Foundation."

We are honored to shine a spotlight on these women, whose stories have driven cultural awareness, offered entertainment that has made us laugh, cry, and everything in between. This year, we will be returning to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and are delighted to return to an in-person format so that we can properly celebrate together.

Becky Brooks, President, Alliance for Women in Media Foundation.

The 47th Annual Gracie Awards, named after the late actress and radio host Gracie Allen, recognize individual achievement and exemplary programming created by, for and about women in all facets of media and entertainment. The awards will be presented during a fundraising gala on May 24th.
