Infant Hit when Gunman Targets Father

Police say a 6-month old baby girl was struck in the abdomen by a bullet that passed through her father's hand as he held her in their Boston apartment.

Police Superintendent Robert Dunford says the girl's injuries that were so serious that the department's homicide unit is investigating. The baby underwent surgery overnight and her condition was not immediately known.

Police did not immediately release the victims' names.

The shooting occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday in the city's Mattapan neighborhood when someone outside the building fired multiple shots into the apartment.

Police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll says the incident was "not random.''
