Report: Economy Has Nonprofits Reeling

The nonprofit sector in Massachusetts is being hard hit by the economy, according to a new report.

A survey conducted for the Boston Foundation found that 67 percent of area nonprofits are experiencing a delay or decline in funding from all sectors, including the government, foundations, grant money and private giving.

Geeta Pradhan, the Boston Foundation's director of programs, said the economy is putting many nonprofits on the edge. "Twelve percent of the organizations expect to operate above break-even this year," she said. "In the last downturn about 60 percent were operating above break even, so it's a big shock to the nonprofit sector."

Of the 950 nonprofits surveyed, 42 percent say they are laying off workers and have cut or frozen salaries.
