'Commandatore' Menino Becomes A Knight

The city of Boston's first mayor of Italian heritage, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, has been knighted by the Italian government.

On Thursday, Menino received the Italian Medal of Honor, and is now the fourth-highest rank of knight in Italy.

Menino joked about the honor during the ceremony at City Hall.

"I've been called Mayor. I've been called Papa ... and some things I don't want to repeat," Menino said. "But now, you have to understand, you have to call me a new title, Commandatore."

Menino said that, joking aside, he is very proud of the honor.
