Bomb Charges Against Mass. Student From Conn.

A 19-year-old student from Connecticut is expected to be arraigned in Massachusetts on charges that he placed a homemade smoke bomb under a bridge in Wheaton College.

Nicholas Barnett of West Simsbury, Conn., is set to appear at the Attleboro District Court on Friday, a day after he was arrested in Norton.

He faces charges of placing an explosive device, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and attempt to commit a crime.

The explosive device was found Tuesday underneath the bridge at Peacock Pond.

It was not immediately clear if Barnett has legal representation.

The school says Barnett will not be allowed to return to campus while the criminal case is under way.

A spokesman says police described the explosive as "a homemade incendiary device designed to cause smoke and fire."
