The Lawrence City Council votes Tuesday evening on whether to increase the high school dropout age from 16 to 18.

City Council President Frank Moran says the measure will help keep young people in school.

“I think if we pass this law [Tuesday night], it would deter from dropping out at age 16. It also gives power to the school administration to, through the court system, bring these kids back to school," Moran said.

Moran said crime by teens will likely decrease if more kids are in school instead of on the streets.

This program aired on June 21, 2011.
