Mass. Lawmakers Close In On Redistricting

Beacon Hill lawmakers are close to releasing their redrawn district maps. The Special Joint Committee on Redistricting will propose a new division of the commonwealth into nine congressional districts. We currently have 10 (PDF).

There's a lot of anticipation over what the new map will look like. Redrawing the political boundaries is a politically fraught process that cost former House Speaker Thomas Finneran his seat.

Finneran left office in 2007 after pleading guilty to criminal obstruction of justice over the way the map was redrawn the last time.

WBUR's Steve Brown is covering the current redistricting process at the State House. He joined Morning Edition to explain the process.
