Company Seeks $68M In Suit Filed Against Brockton

The company that has been battling five years for the right to build a natural gas power plant in Brockton has filed a lawsuit alleging the city and its officials conspired to illegally block the plant and deprive the company of its civil rights.

Brockton Power Co. LLC in the suit filed Tuesday in federal court in Boston is asking the court to force the city to issue permits for plant construction and to pay the company more than $68 million in damages.

The Enterprise reports that company officials said in a statement that they "reluctantly" took legal action because of the city's continued refusal to give the project a "fair and full review."

A spokeswoman for Mayor Linda Balzotti refused comment but a city lawyer called the suit "misguided."
