After a long delay, Democratic Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has officially endorsed Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren in her challenge of Republican incumbent Sen. Scott Brown.

Appearing together at a rally in Boston's Roslindale neighborhood Friday afternoon, Menino said he withheld his endorsement of Warren until he got to know her better.

"I got to know Elizabeth Warren, and now Elizabeth Warren's got my vote, she's got my help," Menino said.

Menino said that his endorsement will get the message across that Greater Boston voters have a candidate who believes in the issues of jobs, education, housing and health care.

Menino had previously praised Brown's independence.

Menino's predecessor, Raymond Flynn, another Democrat, has endorsed Brown.

The endorsement comes a day after the Senate candidates' first televised debate.
