Some U.S. lawmakers are insisting that federal and state regulators must immediately begin paying closer attention to specialty compounding pharmacies, such as the New England Compounding Center in Framingham.

The now-closed pharmacy that's blamed for a deadly nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis was the focus of a second congressional hearing Thursday — this one by the Health Committee of the U.S. Senate.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, of Connecticut, joined WBUR's All Things Considered to discuss the outbreak and its fallout.

This program aired on November 15, 2012.
