Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian David McCullough will headline Books for Breakfast, a provocative literary event to benefit the free programming of 826 Boston, a youth writing center located in Roxbury’s Egleston Square. McCullough, who has been called “master of the art of narrative history,” will muse on his own development as a writer while sharing the stage with some of Boston’s most promising youth authors.
826 student authors will share their own writing from A Place for Me in the World: People Talk About the Work They Love, a recently published collection of interviews with Boston workers, which was hailed by The Boston Globe as a “magnificent book… (and) a triumph of middle school education.” Modeled after Working by journalist Studs Terkel, the collection features a kaleidoscopic array of interviews with workers such as Mayor Menino, a bouncer, snake handler, an MBTA Benefits Coordinator, and the Blue Oyster Cult drummer.
826 Boston teaches creative and expository writing to Boston Public school students and helps teachers inspire their students to write. Since opening the doors of its writing center in Roxbury’s Egleston Square in Fall 2007, 826 Boston has offered writing support to over 7,000 Boston Public School students and published student writing in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and in numerous publications like We Think You’re Old Enough to Know, an anthology of coming-of-age stories by students from the John D. O’Bryant High School of Mathematics and Science. All ticket sales and proceeds from this event will help support 826 Boston’s free youth writing programs.
This program aired on November 28, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
