Starting Jan. 1, 2013, Americans will no longer be allowed to adopt children from Russia. The measure is part of a law signed late last week by Russian President Vladimir Putin which also includes a ban on U.S.-funded political groups operating in Russia. It's seen as retaliation for a new U.S. law that sanctions Russians accused of human rights abuses.

To gauge the impact of the Russian adoption ban, we turn to Adam Pertman, author of "Adoption Nation," and executive director of the nonprofit Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute in Newton.

This program aired on December 31, 2012.
