Work Set To Begin On Boston Skyscraper At Former Filene's Site

Within days, work is set to begin on a massive skyscraper at the long-vacant site of the former Filene's store in Boston's Downtown Crossing.

In addition to restoring the historic building, which Filene's occupied from 1912 until 2006, developer Millenium Partners says it is building what will be the tallest residential building in the Boston skyline.

Downtown Boston Business Improvement District President Rosemarie Sansone says the new construction will change the downtown landscape for the better.

"I hope that when people come here, they're looking for the same hustle and bustle and activity and excitement that has always been here, and that will continue in the future, but it won't be what was here 20 years ago," Sansone said. "It's going to be better."

The first tenant for the new building will be advertising giant Arnold Worldwide, which Millenium spokesman Anthony Pangaro says will happen in September 2014.
