Trooper Shoots 2 During Medford Traffic Stop

Authorities say a state police trooper opened fire on a car that drove at him after an early morning traffic stop in Medford, injuring both men in the vehicle.

The men shot on Route 16 just after 2 a.m. Friday were taken to the hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

The Middlesex district attorney's office says the driver, 19-year-old Stephen Cabrera of Haverhill, remained hospitalized. The passenger was treated and released.

A department spokesman says the unnamed trooper attempted to pull over the vehicle for traffic infractions.

Per protocol, the trooper has been put on paid leave pending the investigation.

The driver is expected to face assault with a dangerous weapon, and traffic violations, including running a red light.
