Somerville Mayor Curtatone Not Running For Governor

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone has decided against running for governor.

Curtatone, who had been weighing a run, said Wednesday that it's not the right time for him and his family to be involved in what he said would be an "all-consuming statewide political campaign."

Curtatone joins another Somerville Democrat, U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, in opting out of the 2014 gubernatorial contest.

Curtatone's decision also follows Attorney General Martha Coakley's announcement last month that she would be a Democratic candidate for the state's top political office.

Other Democrats in the race include state Treasurer Steven Grossman, Newton pediatrician Don Berwick, former federal homeland security official Juliette Kayyem and former Wellesley Selectman Joseph Avellone.

Former Harvard Pilgrim Health Care CEO Charlie Baker is the only Republican in the race.
