As expected, Jon Lester will be on the mound Wednesday night when the Red Sox begin the World Series against the Cardinals at Fenway Park.

Boston manager John Farrell made the decision Monday, but declined to reveal the pitching lineup for the rest of the series. Lester will face St. Louis' Adam Wainwright.

The Sox and the Cardinals have a long postseason history, including the 2004 World Series, when Boston swept St. Louis to end the 86-year World Series championship drought.

Boston Globe sports writer Dan Shaughnessy joined WBUR's Morning Edition to offer some historical perspective on the matchup.

This program aired on October 22, 2013.
