Lydon, also a former anchor of Channel 2’s “Ten O’Clock News,” added, “We’re bringing 'Open Source' back to our first radio home, WBUR in Boston. Drawing on our roots in Boston and our interest in the wider world, we’ll be re-launching radio and online conversation as challenging, as engaging, as various, as irresistible as we can make it.”

Mary McGrath, his producer on “The Connection” and on “Radio Open Source,” a weekly podcast, will be rejoining him at WBUR. They were let go during a dispute with Jane Christo, the general manager in 2001.

The Radio Open Source website will also be an ingredient of the WBUR project. The site will offer more podcasts, which will be shared at wbur.org.

“In a mobile, digitized world, New England remains vital as an American capital of ideas, teaching, learning and research,” said Lydon. “Our goal, drawing on the almighty human voice and the many extensions of modern media, is to make radio talk as bracing and smart as this Global City we’re living in.”More
