Group: Mass. Not Sharing Gun Check Info With Feds

An advocacy group that targets illegal guns is faulting Massachusetts for failing to share mental health records on dangerous individuals with a federal database.

The group Mayors Against Illegal Guns — co-chaired by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg — said Massachusetts has only submitted one record in the last 20 years to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The database maintained by the FBI helps gun dealers quickly perform background checks.

Earlier this year Gov. Deval Patrick proposed requiring Massachusetts courts to send all relevant mental health records to the state's criminal justice information system so the federal government could include this information in the national background check database.
