Portraits Of Boston: 'Ability To Do Something'

This article is more than 8 years old.

"Why did you want to be a doctor?"

“It boils down to the ability to do something. You’re given power, and with it comes responsibility. I come from an environment where there is a lot of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy. I also saw my grandfather die when I was eight, and I saw my dad die when I was 24. A lot of times when you see sick relatives, you feel powerless. I wanted to do something about that. I wanted to help empower other families who feel powerless in similar situations.”

Portraits of Boston is a project of independent photographer Ivan Velinov. He is regularly sharing some of his favorite portraits with WBUR. Visit his website to see the hundreds of portraits he has taken on the streets of Boston.
