Mass. Could See 2 New Political Parties

Massachusetts could soon be granting two new political parties official status.

To win that status, a candidate for the party needs capture more than 3 percent of the vote in any statewide race. That appears to have happened in several races on Tuesday.

In the governor's race, Evan Falchuk won just over the 3 percent according to unofficial returns. That should be enough for his United Independent Party to gain official status.

Falchuk said that was one of his goals in running for governor.

The Green-Rainbow Party also appears to have gained official status with candidates for secretary, treasurer and auditor also crossing the 3 percent bar, according to unofficial results.

The state already has two officials parties: Democrats and Republicans.

Official status allows the party to hold primaries.
