Fire Damages Lawrence Apartment Building

An early morning three-alarm fire at a Lawrence apartment building where the city's mayor once lived has displaced more than 30 residents.

Fire Chief Brian Moriarty says the blaze at the three-story building was reported at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

There were no reports of injuries among residents but one firefighter suffered a wrist injury.

Moriarty said smoke was coming from the building and alarms were sounding inside when firefighters arrived.

He says the cause remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious.

Mayor Daniel Rivera says he lived in the building when his family moved to Lawrence from New York City in 1975.
