In the long-running scandal of convicted Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger, former FBI Agent Robert Fitzpatrick is often credited as a whistleblower who helped expose the gangster.

He wrote a book about the mobster and how secret ties to the FBI protected Bulger from prosecution.

Fitzpatrick testified at many hearings and trials, including Bulger's trial two years ago. But when Fitzpatrick returned to federal court Thursday he was in handcuffs answering to charges of perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from the Bulger trial.

WBUR's David Boeri, who has gotten to know Fitzpatrick in covering the Bulger case, joins Morning Edition with a report on this development.
