Tufts Students End Hunger Strike, Say Protests Will Continue

Tufts University students have ended an almost weeklong hunger strike supporting janitors who face layoffs, but say they'll continue to protest.

The student Tufts Labor Coalition says Saturday the five-day strike ended to protect the health of the four people who had been fasting for more than 120 hours. They also took down their tents from the Tufts' quad where they staged the protest.

Group spokeswoman Anna Gaebler says the campaign will continue, however, and the group plans to meet with the administration Monday. The group is asking that no job cuts be made until July 2016.

A Tufts spokeswoman says the school welcomes the hunger strike's end. She says the students' safety was always the priority and Tufts will continue to work toward "the thoughtful restructuring" of custodial services.
