Boston Rally To Mark Juneteenth And Protest Police Violence

A rally in Roxbury will mark the Juneteenth anniversary and protest against police violence.

Members of Mass Action Against Police Brutality say they'll rally at 1 p.m. Saturday starting at the intersection of Malcolm X Boulevard and Washington Street and ending at Franklin Park. The group has requested the state attorney general appoint a special prosecutor to review past police shootings and prosecute officers when warranted.

Juneteenth marks the day, June 19, 1865, when official news of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation to free all slaves finally reached Texas, two years late. This year is the 150th anniversary of the June 19 declaration.
