Scaled-Back MBTA Late Night Service Begins This Weekend

After a more-than-yearlong pilot, the MBTA is scaling back its late night weekend service.

Beginning this Saturday night/Sunday morning, service will run until approximately 2 a.m. instead of the current 2:30 a.m., the frequency of service will be reduced, and five late night bus routes will be eliminated.

The T says the bus routes being cut — the 15, 22, 71, 73 and 77 — are the "least productive."

In announcing the reduced late night service back in April, state transportation officials called the current service unsustainable. According to State House New Service, the late night pilot cost the T a $7.68-per-passenger subsidy, compared to $2.74 for regular bus rides and 84 cents for regular subway rides.

"The MBTA will continue to review and modify Late Night Service to meet customer needs in a cost effective way while considering future alternative service delivery options," the Department of Transportation said in a statement. "The Late Night Service changes were made following a comprehensive review and public comment process in February and March of this year involving nearly 1,700 participants."

Red Line

-Last Red Line train from Alewife to Ashmont will depart at 1:49AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
-Last Red Line train from Braintree will depart at 1:29AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

Blue Line

-Last Blue Line train from Wonderland will depart at 1:40AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
-Last Blue Line train from Bowdoin will depart at 2:05AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

Orange Line

-Last Orange Line train from Oak Grove will depart at 1:49AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
-Last Orange Line train from Forest Hills will depart at 1:45AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

Green Line

-Last Green Line train from Boston College will depart at 1:30AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
-Last Green Line train from Cleveland Circle will depart at 1:10AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
-Last Green Line train from Riverside will depart at 1:05AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
