Former Haverill Music Teacher Gets Prison Time For Getting 13-Year-Old Student Pregnant

This article is more than 5 years old.

A former Haverhill music teacher and voice coach who got a 13-year-old student pregnant has been sentenced to up to eight years in prison.

The Salem News reports that Joshua Garsteck was sentenced Tuesday seven to eight years for rape of a child and four to five years for sending nude pictures of himself to a second student. The sentences will be served at the same time.

The 34-year-old Garsteck was arrested in 2013.

Garsteck received a prison term even though the mother of the child asked the court that he be spared time behind bars because the now 21-month-old boy needs a father.

Prosecutors sought a sentence below the mandatory minimum but said significant prison time was still warranted.

Garsteck apologized in court.
