It's a rite of fall's back-to-school preparation. Students swarm office supply stores gathering all their materials for the school year. Many of them walk up to cashiers with their parents in tow to foot the bill.

Boston Public Schools teachers aren't as lucky. Many teachers spend hundreds — even thousands — of dollars of their own money to make sure their students have what they need for a successful school year.

Rather than cracking open their piggy banks, more and more teachers are turning to online crowdfunding websites to get what they need and a little of what they want.

WBUR's Erica Morrison reports on this trend.

This segment aired on September 15, 2015.
