A.R.T.'s 'Jagged Little Pill,' Based On Alanis Morissette's Seminal Album, Is Going To Broadway

The musical "Jagged Little Pill," which had its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge last year, is heading to Broadway.

"Jagged Little Pill" is based on Alanis Morissette's acclaimed 1995 album of the same name. The show links together hit songs from the record — which earned two Grammys, including Album of the Year -- through a plot that touches on addiction, race and sexual assault.

The musical is directed by A.R.T. artistic director Diane Paulus and features a book by the writer Diablo Cody, who wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-winning film "Juno." It follows a lineage of productions Paulus directed at A.R.T. that headed to Broadway including "Waitress," "Pippin" and "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess."

The original album's confessional, angsty nature ushered in a seminal moment for women's anger and vulnerability in popular music. Morissette said the stage version of the record captured its essence. "To work with Diablo Cody, whose heart is as open as her mind is bright and brave, has taken this record – which has meant so much to me – to a whole other level of depth, meaning and natural activism," Morissette said in a statement.

"Jagged Little Pill" ran at the A.R.T. for 10 weeks and became the longest-running and highest-grossing production in the theater’s history.

Cast, theater and run time for the Broadway production have not yet been announced.
