Today's Weather: Clouds Depart, Sunshine Returns

It was interesting watching the radar last night as there were pockets of moderate snow over southeastern Massachusetts, but much of the snow elsewhere was evaporating before it reached the ground. Eventually all areas saw the snow and this morning we are looking at anywhere from 1 to 4 inches with a few spots closing in on 5.

The reason why the snow wasn't quite as much as I expected was all that dry air. What happens is the snow falls from the clouds and it evaporates before reaching the ground. If that happens for 2 or 3 hours longer than expected, then that's an inch or two that should have been on the ground that ends up in the air.

At any rate today looks like we will see the snow come to an end. I expect skies to partially clear during the afternoon. The sun is now as strong as it would be in the middle of October, so it doesn't take much to do some melting, especially on dark surfaces.

Friday looks like a drier day, with a blend of clouds and sunshine and temperatures about where you'd expect this time of the year — right around 40. A weak system brings a couple of rain and snow showers for Saturday with a more important storm for Sunday night or Monday. We'll have to keep an eye on this particular system to see whether it brings rain or snow but it has the potential to bring more in the way of precipitation then we have seen in the past couple of situations.
