Schools Identify 2 Boys Who Died After Falling Through Ice In Chicopee

The two boys who died after apparently falling through the ice of a Massachusetts river last weekend have been publicly identified by their schools.

Minhal Hussain, 10, was a fifth-grader at Litwin Elementary School in Chicopee, according to social media posts by school Principal Elizabeth Masse.

Masse says she and Minhal's teachers attended funeral services Wednesday.

The other boy, Salman Jaffrey, 11, was a sixth-grader at Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy in Cumberland, Rhode Island, according to an email to parents from the school's chief executive officer, Jeremy Chiappetta, according to The Providence Journal.

The boys are believed to be cousins, authorities have said.

The boys went to play in the woods of Chicopee last Saturday and were reported missing by family members when they did not return home. The older boy was recovered from the Chicopee River later Saturday and died at the hospital Sunday. The younger boy was recovered from the water Tuesday.

The deaths were ruled accidental.
