Boston saw a spike in violence in the city over Labor Day weekend, with police reporting 12 shootings and seven stabbings between Friday and Tuesday.

Mayor Marty Walsh called the uptick "unacceptable."

"Our goal is always to get to zero," Walsh said. "My heart goes out to the victims and the families and the communities who were harmed over this weekend."

Police Commissioner William Gross said reopening courts closed by the pandemic will help crack down on the violence.

"These individuals causing violence in our neighborhoods should be locked up," Gross said. "That's why you have twelve shootings within three days. It's the same individuals. There has to be some accountability."

None of the shootings or stabbings over the weekend were fatal.

As of Sunday, there have been 41 homicides in Boston this year, up from 28 during the same time period in 2019.
